Gestational diabetes

Hello doctor, I am 18 years old, pregnant for the first time, and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 27 weeks, which I have been managing through dietary adjustments. I am currently 35 weeks pregnant. Could you please advise me on what I should pay attention to after giving birth?

Goodmorning,

Managing gestational diabetes is an important step to ensure both you and your baby remain healthy. After giving birth, it’s crucial to continue taking care of your health to prevent long-term complications and support your recovery. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  1. Blood Sugar Monitoring: Check your glucose levels regularly, as gestational diabetes increases the risk of type 2 diabetes later.
  2. Healthy Diet and Exercise: Maintain a balanced diet and stay active to support postpartum recovery and prevent diabetes.
  3. Breastfeeding: It can help regulate blood sugar and support your baby's health.
  4. Postpartum Checkup: Get tested for diabetes 6–12 weeks postpartum and periodically thereafter.
  5. Baby’s Health: Monitor your baby for low blood sugar or other complications early on.

You should see a doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms so they can examine and provide further advice.

Wishing you good health!
